We’ve all stood in awe, watching one-legged skiers navigate a steep run; the outrigger skis on poles carving alongside the one ski, their single ripped quad absorbing G-forces, the balance of the skier making our own bipedal battles with gravity seem trivial. But who had the idea to try skiing with one leg in the first place? And what is the story that led to such a fantastic pursuit for so many people? Well, I just found out. And it’s an even better story than I’d ever imagined:

The short documentary, “Ski Pioneer,” (see below for video) about disabled skier Paul Leimkuehler won Best Documentary at the Three Minute Film Fest on June 8 in Santa Fe, N.M. The documentary was produced by Katie Leimkuehler, the granddaughter of the film’s subject.

Ski Pioneer is a short film chronicling the life of Paul “Bud” Leimkuehler, a speed skater and WWII veteran who–after losing his leg in the Battle of the Bulge–returned home to become the first amputee skier in the US. The film, created by Paul’s granddaughter Katie Leimkuehler, has just earned Best Documentary at the Three Minute Film Festival in Sante Fe, NM, where it was selected from among 350 entries.

Paul E. Leimkuehler’s life was seemingly built around his legs. He competed in the 1936 U.S. Olympic Cycling Trials, and the Northeast Ohio native was the Ohio State Cycling champion in 1938.
